Unofficially known as Wyoming's "City of Gold," this former gold rush-era town has been restored and turned into a historic site, preserving the structures and heritage of this Old West boom mining town.
South Pass City was the site of intense prospecting following the discovery of gold in 1866. The presence of gold promoted a population boom as many adventurers and prospectors arrived to capitalize on the promise of gold deposits. After nearly ten years without finding any large gold deposits, the city begun to empty out, with the last of the population leaving in 1949.
