Mesa Falls Scenic Byway

This scenic byway offers the traveler a view of the full range of the landscape of eastern Idaho. Stat out in rolling farmland, follow a rumbling, roiling river, and experience the geology of the largest volcanic caldera in the United States.

The byway also includes views of two of last undisturbed major waterfalls in the American west. The Upper and Lower Mesa Falls source water has not been diverted for irrigation or damned for hydroelectricity. Both falls are accessible via hiking trails in include scenic overlooks, picnic areas, and campgrounds.

Driving Directions

Connects to Teton Scenic Byway at Ashton, Idaho. This Scenic Byway begins at the Highway 47 junction with Highway 20 and ends at Island Park, ID.

Highlights and Key Points Along the Route

Along this route, folks can stop at interpretive signs that give information about the byway and area. Prominent stops along the route include Bear Gulch, Lower Mesa Falls and Upper Mesa Falls. This road becomes a snowmobile road in the winter with cross-country trails along its side. The wildflowers are amazing in the spring. One can sometimes see moose, bears, foxes, and other animals along the corridor.
