Madison Buffalo Jump State Park

Back

Termed a Cultural Park by the Montana State Parks administration, the park contains a limestone cliff overlooking the Madison River that was used by various Native American tribes over a period of 2,000 years. The site was most recently vacated around 200 years ago. Intricately woven into the culture of the region's Native Americans, 'runners' (young men highly skilled in the herding of buffalo) would push large herds of buffalo over the cliff. Although the Native Americans used every part of the buffalo for food, clothes, shelter and tools, many bones still lie buried below the cliff. The site offers insight into Native American culture as well as expansive vistas of the Madison river valley.
