Fort Washakie Historic Site
This military post was named for the Shoshone chief and U.S. army scout buried here with full military honors. The Fort Washakie Historic District also depicts a historical recreation of the 1868 military encampment and is located in the Wind River Indian Reservation.
Located 17 miles (27 kilometers) northwest of Lander, WY along U.S. Highway 287, For Washakie is an settlement named in honor of the last chief of the Eastern Shoshone tribe, Chief Washakie, and is home to approximately 2,000 people.
