Crowheart Butte

Back

A renown warrior and leader of the Eastern Shoshone, Chief Washakie defeated his Crow adversary Big Robber in a man-to-man fight to the death here in 1866 over control of the regions' hunting grounds. Legend says that the Shoshone victor extracted the heart from the dead Crow leader and paraded it on the point of a lance as a sign of respect for the Crow warrior's courage.
