For a penny, buy a candy at Cooke City General Store and watch your sale rung up on the original 1886 hand-cranked cash register. Cooke City and sisters Silver Gate and Colter Pass offer skiers guided access to backcountry runs.

Unspoiled and rich in natural beauty, this destination has plenty to offer: art and gift shops, lodging, restaurants, recreation, outfitters, a visitor center, and events & entertainment. Perfect access point for world class wildlife watching in Yellowstone National Park's Lamar Valley featuring wolves, elk, bison and grizzlies.

This area offers a lot of winter recreation. Snowmobiling is popular in Cooke City and Silver Gate, while cross-country skiing is popular around the park area. A number of guides provide motor coach access to back country skiing for both Nordic and downhill skiers and snowboarders. In addition, Cooke City is a gateway community for both the Beartooth All American Road and the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway.

History

The historic alpine towns of Cooke City, Silver Gate and Colter Pass are nestled in the heart of the Absaroka-Beartooth mountains at the Northeast Entrance Gate of Yellowstone National Park. The towns retain their "Old West" charm and character which can be traced to mountain-man lore and gold mining history.
