Carbon County Historical Society & Museum

The Carbon County Historical Society and Museum is located 63 miles from the Northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park at the base of scenic Beartooth Highway. Housed in the 1909 historic Labor Temple in downtown Red Lodge, Montana the museum is home to the Greenough and Linderman rodeo collections, Liver Eatin’ Johnston information, Waples family gun collection, an interactive coal and hard rock mine exhibit, details of the 1943 Smith Mine explosion that killed 74 coal miners which remains the central event in county history, the Carbon County archives, and much more. The staff assists with family genealogy and historic research. The gift shop has a large variety of historical books and gifts.

Seasons Open: Off Season research archives available Monday - Wednesdays by appointment

Hours Open: Summer M-Sat 10-6, Sun 11-3; Off Season Thu-Fri 10-5, Sat 11-3

Fees: $5 adult, $3 student, 5 and under free, Family $12
